MAZOR FARM - CALL FOR ACTION


The Mazor breeding farm currently holds 1,000 long tailed macaque monkeys. Some of these monkeys were wild caught on the island of Mauritius, while others were born in captivity. Mazor is a link in the chain of cruel trade in which monkeys are forcibly removed from their natural environment then flown thousands of miles in small cages to laboratories or breeding facilities. These animals will have been separated from their family groups, the young brutally separated from their mothers.

Mazor is little more than a monkey breeding factory, whose manager considers the monkeys to be "production units" whose sole purpose is to increase profits, through the sale of the offspring to laboratories. To further increase profitability, the young are separated early from their mothers, allowing these females to mate as soon as possible. Early forced separation is traumatic to both the young and the mothers. These mothers will cry out and cling in desperation to the bars of their cages in a vain attempt to look for their young. The young who have been moved to a separate enclosure, will in turn look for their mothers and display signs of severe distress. Not all of these animals will survive this difficult transition and some will die.

Those who survive will have their chests tattooed with a four digit serial number and then be sold to laboratories in Europe, the US and Israel. Every year, hundreds of these terrified young monkeys will be forced to travel huge distances in tiny crates to faraway destinations, to a fate worse than death, which awaits them. Each of these "units" will fill the pockets of the breeding farm manager to the tune of $2800.



A fate worse than death

The vast majority of these young monkeys will be sold to laboratories that specialize in toxicology (poisoning tests). Among the clients of Mazor are Covance (Germany) , the Swedish centre for Biological studies, as well as laboratories in the UK, Belgium, Italy and the US. The monkeys will be housed in miserable conditions and will undergo toxicity tests in which they will be injected or force fed with drugs and other chemicals. Most of the animals will die during these tests, and those who survive will be killed at the end of the experiment.

Most of the monkeys sold to laboratories within Israel will undergo invasive brain experiments. These experiments involve water deprivation, immobilization in a primate chair for extended periods of time, surgical removal of the top of the skull, and implantation of equipment in the skull and the brain itself. These types of experiment typically last several years, after which most of the monkeys will be killed. In rare instances, individual monkeys are released and allowed to undergo rehabilitation in sanctuaries. This is a relatively recent phenomenon and is due in large part to public outcry.


CALL for ACTION!

Last July, Behind Closed Doors together with other animal rights' groups, called on the Minister of Environmental Protection to withdraw the Mazor trade licence (import and export). The Minister is currently studying our written proposal and is expected shortly to announce his decision.

‘Felix’ was a macaque monkey who was tortured for one entire year by vivisector Tipu Aziz. While excellent alternative research methods exist, Felix was but one of countless numbers of sentient beings that continue to suffer and die inside Oxford laboratories every year for no reason other than greed.

Felix was subjected to the standard method employed to coerce a monkey into compliance: starvation. He had the top of his skull sliced off, an extremely painful procedure. Electrodes were forced into his brain and then he was fitted with a cranial chamber. He suffered alone in his barren cage until the day his torturers had finished with him; the day they put him to death.

But Felix unfortunately hasn't been the only victim at Oxford testing facilities.
Lets remember George - kidnapped, abusued, tortured and blinded, JEZ and Bjee - just a few examples amongst many of the abuse taking place behind the closed doors of the university's labs. It now appears that Oxford University, with the backing of the Labour Government have become a law unto themselves and the university now believe they are untouchable.



Do you really call this science? It looks more like a horror house to me.....

Animal Testing and the European Parliament

"I'm writing to you at a critical point in a once-in-a-lifetime battle where the lives of millions of innocent animals are at stake. Those animals need you to stand up for them now by writing to Members of the European Parliament.
This battle is over a new law that will govern animal experiments across Europe. The fate of hundreds of millions of monkeys, pigs, dogs, sheep, cats, rabbits, mice, rats, guinea pigs, ferrets, birds and other animals over the next few decades is hanging in the balance.

Next Tuesday, 31st March, will see an absolutely crucial vote at the European Parliament. MEPs on the Agriculture Committee will be voting on a set of proposals produced by an English MEP for the South West England region called Neil Parish.
My colleagues and I across the European animal protection movement have been horrified by many of Parish's proposals, which actually severely weaken the original draft produced by the European Commission last November. It would mean that animals will be even more vulnerable to the kind of horrific abuse exposed by Uncaged in cross-species organ transplant experiments.

In 2003 we won a historic legal victory that allowed us to publish the ‘Diaries of Despair’ – daily records of dying monkeys who had been transplanted with pig organs. They provide unique, damning evidence of why it is imperative we act now on behalf of animals. This was the harrowing demise of just two of the monkeys who had already suffered a dangerous, agonising journey half way round the word and lengthy confinement in a bleak wire cage:

X536f was observed: "looking very weak with head in hands... vomiting profusely”

On X528f’s final day of life she was “Lying on floor, bruising on face and arms, weak, subdued, inactive, in a crouched position showing limited response to touch.”

These animals were suffering the devastating effects of vital organ failure and drug cocktails so toxic that they caused internal haemorrhaging. Their pain and suffering was unimaginable. We can’t stand by while such atrocities are inflicted on the innocent – we need your help to save them from this wretched fate.

These are some of the key points to mention:

(1) You are alarmed by attempts to weaken animal protection measures that the European Commission wishes to see introduced.

(2) The Commission wants to phase out the use of wild-caught primates. Amendments that conflict with this goal must be opposed. Despite scaremongering by pro-animal research industry groups, there is no evidence that such a phase-out would damage medical research.

(3) You oppose proposals that would allow any animal to be subjected to 'prolonged, severe' suffering.

(4) Reducing animal use will improve the quality of science, as well as preventing animal suffering. This will make European laboratories attractive to business and academic researchers rather than – as has been threatened – lead to an exodus to parts of the world where standards are lower.

(5) It is vital that all proposed 'projects' using animals are scrutinised rather than being given automatic approval. The Committee is faced with proposals that would allow most research projects to go through on the nod.

(6) You support measures that call for regular thematic reviews of specific areas of animal use and replacement by non-animal systems. Without such a systematic approach, the introduction of non-animal methods will be an unnecessarily protracted process.

(7) Increased accountability, transparency and access to information – as well as data sharing to avoid duplication of experiments – are all vital.

(8) You urge Committee members not to bow to the powerful, self-interested biomedical lobby. They should vote instead for measures that increase animal welfare and which tackle unjustified secrecy and concealment.

Felix RIP......

Today it is with much regret that we must inform everyone of the death of Felix.
The information we have been given is that he has been killed by those that tormented and tortured him for almost a year.

It is difficult to comprehend the type of person that can perform barbaric and gruesome procedures on a living sentient creature for an entire year. This person, if that is indeed the correct word for such an individual (monster, would probably be more apt), is capable of looking into the eyes of an innocent non human victim everyday but yet is incapable of feeling pangs of remorse or even sympathy with regards to the pain and suffering they are inflicting on an
individual capable of a full range of emotions from fear, to pain through to happiness.

Unfortunately Felix would certainly have experienced no happiness in the last year of his sad life at Oxford University, but if truth be told, he probably was never able to experience happiness or any sort of joy in his entire life.
It now appears that he was born in a cage. He lived in a cage and he ultimately suffered in a cage before being put to death alone in a cage.

Let's not forget, Oxford University have the audacity to label themselves as an institution of 'academic excellence'! However, the reality is that the life Felix was forced to endure has nothing to do with 'academia', but everything to do with arrogance; an arrogance of individuals who hold life so cheap, that they can dictate not just how and when to end a sentient life, but how much suffering they can and will inflict upon that life.

Despite what university representatives might say, Felix's final few months would have been filled with pain, torment, and much, much suffering. There's no hiding this fact and people should be made aware as to what exactly Felix went through in his final months. We can now disclose that Felix had the top of his skull sliced off, a procedure that has been documented through human and non human primate research as extremely painful. Electrodes were forced into
his brain and then he was fitted with a cranial chamber (a box like contraption that sits on top of the skull). His pain must have been unbearable but he had no one to comfort him. Just a barren cage surrounded him, there were no comforts. There was no kin to cuddle up to, to ease his pain. He was alone until the day his torturers had finished with him; the day they put him to death.

Felix is dead now, and it's important that we remember him. We have looked at the photos of him on numerous occasions and have been lost in his sad expression, his beautiful face. We will never forget him. Cry if you want to.
Don't be ashamed to mourn his sad, sad life. At SPEAK everyone has shed a tear for poor Felix. We had for months now been fighting to save Felix but we couldn't save him despite all the efforts we put into getting him released.

However, the fight has not been in vain: it continues.

Yes, by all means shed a tear for Felix, but this is far from the end of Felix's story. This is just the beginning. We know more today than we ever knew about the project Felix was being used and abused for. We now know that Felix was just the first victim of a 5 year project that began in 2006; a project that will be using, abusing and killing 2 macaque monkeys every year. The project will run for 5 years, which means that it still has about 4 years to run.

From the beginning of our Fighting for Felix campaign we have maintained that although Felix was an individual he was also a symbol. A symbol for not just the 1000's of animals dying inside Oxford University every year but the hundreds of millions being sacrificed in a fraudulent scientific practice worldwide. We still have everything to fight for, indeed we owe it to Felix not just to keep fighting for the animals but to redouble our efforts, and that's exactly what we will be doing at SPEAK. First and foremost we must bring to an end the project that was responsible for the suffering and death of Felix.
Remember this, 8 macaque monkeys will be suffering the same fate as Felix over the next 4 years if we don't stop the vivisectors at Oxford University.

Join with us. This battle is far from over. The animals need you and we need you by our side to fight the good fight. Let Felix's memory live on in all of us as we battle to end the crime that is vivisection.
